SMFは、コミュニティとコミュニケーションのツールだといっても過言ではありません。そこには、たくさんのコミュニティを行う方法があるのです。掲示板への投稿、個人メッセージのやり取り、メール、ICQ、AIM、そして YIM。もちろん、それらコミュニティを行う方法の全ては、メンバーにのみ利用可能となっています。例外をいえば、フォーラムスタッフの決断により、掲示板への投稿をゲストに許可した場合です。この場合、未登録のユーザの全てがメンバーリストの閲覧、メンバーへの個人ッセージの送信を行うことができません。

個人メッセージを使う

解説

通常のメールはメンバーと私的に通信を行うよい方法であるとはいえ、そこにはいくつかの欠点があります。メッセージを書き、送信するには、メールのアプリケーションを立ち上げなければなりません。そして、受信者も自分の電子メールのアプリケーションを立ち上げなければならないのです。自分のメールを確認しますが、そのメッセージは他の全てのメールと混ざり合ってしまい、さらには受信者のもとへと届くのに、時には数分から１時間もかかってしまいます。

SMFはそんなメールにとって代わり、すばやく、そしてより機密な方式を提供します。掲示板上での個人メッセージは、受信者の個人的な受信箱へと瞬時に提供されます。そのメールは完全にSMFを通して送受信されますので、受信者は他のプログラムを立ち上げたり、SMFから離れる必要が全くありません。また個人メッセージは、送受信者共にさらなる卓越したプライバシーをも与えます。つまり、どちらも実際のメールアドレスを明かさなくてもいいのです。個人メッセージは、双方のハンドルと名前しか見せません。

もし受信者がオンラインではない場合、相手が次回ログインし手作業で読んだり削除したりするまで、個人メッセージはそのメンバーの受信箱にとどまってくれます。SMFの個人メッセージは、内蔵型であり、高機密なメールシステムなのです。

To read your personal messages, you need to be ログイン, then follow the link that says something like 'やぁ, [ユーザー名]さん, you have x 件のメッセージ, x が新着です。'.

The PM interface is similar in operation to that of the 記事一覧. While we are showing the inbox interface here, the outbox works in much the same way:

• Some forums show the ナビゲーションツリー at the top in a space-saving horizontal mode.
• The main 削除 button deletes all messages in your inbox (or outbox if open). Note that the checkbox and lower Delete button also allow you to delete selected messages, with the top checkbox selecting all.
• The Outbox button toggles to your outbox, where it obviously becomes an Inbox button.
• The New Message button enables you to start a new message, which is similar to starting a new topic but adds 'To:' and 'Bcc:' (blind carbon copy) fields and the option to save to your outbox.
• The リロード button checks for new messages by refreshing the page.
• The 投稿日, 題名, and From links enable you to sort the columns by these parameters (with Date also toggling between descending and ascending order as indicated by the little arrow).
• The main subject title links to the start of the message, which will be further down the same page.
• The page numbers link to further pages of messages as applicable.

メッセージの返信を書く

There are actually several different ways to start a new personal message, but all require you to be logged in:

• You can follow the link that says something like 'Hey, [username], you have x messages, x are new', then click the New Message button in your inbox.
• You can click another member's name, followed by Send this member a personal message from his/her プロフィール summary screen.
• You can start a new message direct by clicking the IM on/offline icon from the user info accompanying all of his/her posts.
• You can start a new message direct by clicking the PM on/offline icon from the Current Status in his/her profile summary screen. (This icon/link is often duplicated in the user info described above.)
• Replying to a message is very similar to replying to a topic.
